Sehwatu Chapter is one of three Chapters in Catawba Lodge. The Chapter comprises the Northeast region of the Mecklenburg County Council, serving the same segment of units as the Mecklenburg County Council’s Hornets Nest District. In 2024, we were proud to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Chapter! One of our most landmark accomplishments is obtaining the Honor Chapter Award for 20 consecutive years! We have won the coveted Green Arrow several times throughout our history for outstanding performances at Catawba Lodge’s Spring and Fall Fellowship events and several spirit awards to affirm our passion!! The present day Sehwatu Chapter comprises two Chapters, which operated independently for some time. The Polaris Chapter debuted in 1998. In traditional Native American culture, Polaris is translated to “The star that does not walk around” and is seen as the “Great Chief of the Sky.” It symbolizes leadership. The Tatanka Chapter first debuted in 2000. In Lakota Indian culture, Tatanka means “Bison.” The Lakota were a group within the larger Sioux Indian Tribe. They are sometimes referenced as the “Buffalo Nation.” The Lakota people held the Buffalo in high regard and reverence as a symbol of the divine. Eventually, in 2004, the Tatanka and Polaris Chapters were merged to form present day Sehwatu Chapter. We are extremely proud of our heritage and legacy of leadership and service that all of our dedicated youth and adult volunteers have forged over the duration of our tenure as an OA Chapter and are looking forward to many more years of continued success!!
